“I can’t get People to understand, there is no such thing as a bad food, just bad timing!”

Dr. Willey wrote this article for the Idaho State Journal in his weekly column.  We wanted to share the third installment with you!

As our series in the decriminalization of certain foods and food groups comes to a close, I will use this last modest article to discuss sugar.  Sugar is a part of our lives.  It tastes good.  It makes you feel good.  It adds to social situations. It comes in a variety of textures, colors, and selections.

“Health is not the avoidance of things (unless it is a truck…), it is finding balance, learning to question everything, and enjoying life. That is the real secret to health.”

I will confess that it is a nemesis of mine as a diet writer with a purpose of optimal health for everyone I meet; however I will be the first to acknowledge that diet plans that criminalize sugar are a set up for failure.  Dieting much like life is about balance.  Sugar too, should be looked at with moderation being your aim.  Alcohol in and of itself is not bad, unless you are an alcoholic.  Sugar should not be viewed as bad, unless it controls you.  That goes for about everything in life; sugar, fat, and fast food included.

My thought with this series was to provide a varied view of what most would admittedly consider horrific foods and food types.  My goal however has been to reemphasize the importance of moderation.  Health is not the avoidance of things (unless it is a truck…), it is finding balance, learning to question everything, and enjoying life.  That is the real secret to health.
